Stillness in the City: An Introduction to Christian Meditation
Details
"Meditation is as natural to the spirit as breathing is to the body. Deeply rooted in the Christian tradition, it is an ancient spiritual discipline, a simple way into union with the Spirit of Christ."
If you would like to establish or deepen a meditation practice, this will be a series of five sessions to introduce the practice of Christian meditation as it was rediscovered and shared by Benedictine monk, Fr John Main, OSB (1926-1982). This form of silent, imageless prayer using a mantra or prayer word is rooted in the Gospel and the letters of Paul, and was practiced and taught by the Desert Fathers and Mothers of the 4th century.
It is the simplest form of contemplative practice that I have encountered, the one that I have been able to be most faithful to, and consequently the one that has made the most difference in my day-to-day life. It is my hope to share this gift with any and all who would be interested at this time.
We will meet in the church conference room from 4:00 to 5:30 pm to include:
- An introduction to the practice and its teachings
- A time of meditation (~20 minutes)
- Brief sharing
Afterward, those who wish can walk together to Busboys and Poets (just up the street) to continue the conversation.
The dates are below, and will all be held at the Seekers Church except the third session:
- Session 1: Sun, Sep 10th @ 4pm at Seekers Church
- Session 2: Sun, Sep 17th @ 4pm at Seekers Church
- Session 3: Sun, Sep 24th @ 4pm ONLINE (link to be provided)
- Session 4: Sun, Oct 1st @ 4pm at Seekers Church
- Session 5: Sun, Oct 8th @ 4pm at Seekers Church
We are paying for the use of the room at Seekers Church, so we'll hope to have at least 5 attendees to move forward. Contributions are welcomed, and can be donated at the link near the top of this page or in a basket at the session.
