Ripper Time: The Bell Tower

The book bridges the gap between Victorian London and early 20th-century America by proposing a radical theory about the real identity of Jack the Ripper. [1]
- The Premise: Graysmith notes that the Jack the Ripper murders abruptly ended in London's Whitechapel district. Five years later, a series of brutal, ritualistic murders involving priests, parishioners, and choirboys began plaguing a church in San Francisco. [1]
- The Suspect: Graysmith points the finger at Pastor John George Gibson (referred to as "Pastor Jack"). Gibson, an English priest who had previously lived in London, allegedly bore an uncanny resemblance to the only surviving eyewitness descriptions of the Ripper. [1, 2]
- The Twist: While another man, a medical student named Theo Durrant, was ultimately arrested, convicted, and executed for the horrific San Francisco "Belfry Murders," Graysmith argues that the real culprit behind both the London and San Francisco atrocities was actually Pastor Gibson. [1, 2]
