What we’re about

DC kids need considerably more support than schools are currently able to provide. Two out of three DC students are reading below grade level‒more than 60,000 kids; nearly one in four are chronically absent at least one day a week. DC Tutoring & Mentoring Initiative (DCTMI) is working to change that.

Founded in 2016, DCTMI has recruited more than 3,000 volunteers in 2023 for our 50+ nonprofit partner organizations and schools at farmers markets and other outdoor events and spaces. These volunteers go on to serve through our partner organizations as “big brothers and sisters,” mentors to help high school students navigate the challenges of young adulthood, tutors to help elementary school students improve their reading and math skills, and much more.

Our goal is for at least 1 in 10 DC adults to get involved as a tutor or mentor, so every student has access to extra support. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of students, strengthen our schools, foster a sense of community, and create a brighter future for all residents in our city.

Live in the DC Metro Area? Take an active part in building a better world and learn about becoming a mentor or tutor with us!
Come to our Info Session, to learn about how YOU can give back, pay it forward, and make a world of difference for DC kids by devoting 1-2 hours a week to serving your community as a mentor, tutor, or coach for elementary, middle, or high school students!
Join us from 5:30pm-6:30pm on Thursday, Nov. 6 on Zoom (details sent after RSVPing).
We need hundreds of volunteers TODAY to support the youth in DC. You tell us when you're available, what age group you'd like to work with, and whether you want to mentor or tutor, and we'll do our best to find an easy way for YOU to get involved!
You do NOT need a college degree -- just a good heart and a willingness to be a reliable, caring adult in a student's life.
We have opportunities in the mornings, afternoons, evenings, and on weekends! Volunteers can help in a traditional tutoring environment or more flexible mentoring programs.
Got questions? Email or text us at info@dcTutorMentor.org or 202-688-1261.
We can't wait to see you there!
