Richard Weston will give a brief introduction to cryptocurrencies, specifically Bitcoin, and answer questions about recent developments in the Bitcoin space including the upcoming mid-November hard fork. He will go over the basics of what Bitcoin is and how it works, including:

• How long do BTC transactions take to settle now? Why are fees so high?

• What is Segregated Witness? Why did Bitcoin split into Bitcoin Segwit, Bitcoin Gold, and Bitcoin Cash? Is another split coming in mid-November and if so, why?

• How is double-spending prevented and security maintained when there are two versions of the blockchain?

• How can I protect my bitcoins during these hard forks? What are the risks?

• How are the exchanges handling these hard forks?

• How is bitcoin adoption dealing with the split?

• Who makes decisions in the bitcoin community? How much control or influence do governments have over the bitcoin network (e.g., US, China, Russia)?

• How is bitcoin treated for income tax purposes, how do you declare it? When there is hard fork, how are the new coins treated for tax purposes?
