The Spanish Civil War was a prelude to WWII. It has been confusing to a lot of people. Historian Richard Rhodes will help us to clear away any confusion. Here is what the publisher has to say about the book:

"The Spanish Civil War (1936–39) inspired & haunted a great number of artists & writers. The war spurred breakthroughs in military & medical technology as well. New aircraft, new weapons, new tactics & strategy all emerged during this time. Progress arose from horror: the doctors & nurses who volunteered to serve with the Spanish defenders devised advances in battlefield surgery & blood transfusion. In those ways & in many others, the Spanish Civil War served as a test bed for WWII & for the entire 20th century.

"Rhodes goes into battlefields & bomb shelters, into art studios, into crowded war hospitals, & into the hearts & minds of a rich cast of characters to show how the ideological, esthetic & technological developments that emerged in Spain changed the world forever."

Please remember that this is, first and foremost, a book club. Like any local book club, the point is discussion about a shared experience - reading the book! It is not a lecture series. So as usual, get yourself a copy and read it, then join us for another interesting discussion. We will still be operating virtually.

A zoom link to the discussion will be sent a day before the meeting.
