SCHEDULE
5.45pm Open doors
6.15pm Intro and three talks
Modern Cyber Security - An Introduction to Zero Trust - Matthew Gribben
(Pitched at software developers of all levels and anybody else in technology)
The way we approach cyber security and how we build secure applications has changed dramatically over the course of the past decade. This talk would walk through what those changes are and how they have impacted the way we build secure systems, in particular the Zero Trust approach to cyber, how this works and what the shortcomings are.
Take Home vs Live Code Challenge - Adel Smee
(Pitched at hiring managers and people looking for work)
I'm going to present a scorecard on the age old grudge match between giving software engineers a take home code challenge to show off their skills, vs a live code challenge in which they are presented with a small problem and work with the interviewers to solve it in real time. It's only six months and 30 engineers worth of data so far, but there's enough there to give you food for thought on this often controversial hiring stage
Things you didn’t know you could do in a web app - Daniel Elkington
(Pitched at people new to web technologies or who might be involved in choosing between web and native implementations)
There are so many new things the web can now do that you might not know about! Things like the Screen Wake Lock API, the Payment Request API, the Battery API, and even running Virtual Reality! Let’s take a quick look at some things that may convince you to make your next app a web app!
7.15pm Break for some Food
7.45pm Three more talks
The First Time I Did a Production Deploy, and How it Was a Total Disaster - Gavin Davidson
(Pitched at anyone who has ever worked on a software project, including non-devs)
I'll tell the story of a formative "go live" moment in my career that went catastrophically wrong. While this disaster was a stressful part of my carrer, it taught me many valuable lessons about what to do, and importantly what not to do when things bad!
Software development on an iPad: the state in 2023 - Franc Battaglini
(Pitched at anyone interested in technology)
With the release of the arm M processors to the iPad pro lineup, these devices boast unparalleled power. But does the software hold it back?
(Unfortunately, Brad Thomas is no longer able to join us. Look out for his talk on APIs explained at a future DDD by Night!)
8.45pm Close
