Bixby, Samsung's Voice Assistant: From Keyword to Intention Recognition

Miren Urteaga Aldalur is a linguist and product manager at Samsung

This talk will focus on the technologies needed to build a voice assistant. It will keep as center point Samsung’s voice assistant Bixby, which is available in 8 languages across the world (5 EU languages) in a variety of Samsung mobile phones.

First an overview of the needed infrastructure and the challenges regarding user education will be presented.
Then, the talk will offer an overview of the technologies needed in a voice assistant:

  1. Automatic Speech Recognition: how a sound wave is transcribed into words
  2. Natural Language Understanding: extraction of meaning from a sentence
  3. Natural Language Generation: response generation
  4. Text To Speech: speech synthesis

Open Source Software, especially the PyData stack is a de-facto standard in modern analytics toolchain. This talk will provide an overview of the PyData Ecosystem from a business perspective. Alexander and Ingo will present how to get stuff done in 2020. We’ll feature basics tools as Pandas incl. their latest updates, present the Jupyter ecosystem incl. their latest additions as Voilà. We are going to have a look on Visualisation options, Prediction and Natural Language processing.

Ingo and Alexander are both partners at KÖNIGSWEG, a boutique consultancy for Data Science with strong relationships with the Open Source community. Ingo Stegmaier’s background is in banking and he has been working in wealth management for companies as Morgan Stanley or UBS in the past. Alexander Hendorf’s background is in programming and Data Science, he’s a Python Software Foundation fellow and chairman of the Python Software Verband
