Python, Politics and Data Science: February PyMunich Meetup

Woohoo, we missed the cozy JetBrains atmosphere! The next PyMunich meetup features 3 talks 👩‍🏫👨‍🏫🧑‍💻

👉 19:00 Juan Carlos Medina: "Politics + Data Science: Monitoring Social Media and Uncovering the Misinformation Ecosystem"

Trump, Brexit, Cambridge Analytica... In the last few years, we have had to confront the consequences of the use and misuse of data science algorithms in manipulating public opinion through social media. The use of private data to microtarget individuals is a daily practice (and a trillion-dollar industry), which has serious side-effects when the selling product is your political ideology. How can we cope with this new scenario? In this talk, Juan Carlos will show his research on online political communication and how Python helps him to monitor and discover online political misinformation.

Juan Carlos Medina Serrano is a data scientist working at the Bavarian School for Public Policy of the Technical University of Munich. Juan Carlos has worked as a data scientist in companies like BMW, Bosch and Siemens. Currently, he is pursuing a PhD and his research involves the spread of misinformation in social media and its effects on the political landscape. He has participated in several radio interviews and in TV programmes and has been an advisor to the European Commisson and local German Parliaments.
