Baring Head lizard monitoring - with real lizards!

Greater Wellington Regional Council in association with Ecogecko are starting research to monitor changes in lizard occupancy with the ongoing management of Baring head. We have a great opportunity to help them by checking lizard traps!

From the Regional Council:
There are 205 pitfall traps the size of a 4litre pale They are monitored over 8-9 consecutive days each December. We envisage people working in pairs with one person having had experience of handling and catching lizards. To monitor the trap is opened. The lizards photographed and tagged with a ink marker them released.
The routes around the pitfalls will range from easy to difficult. Some easier ones are on the coastal and river flats the most difficult on the escarpments.

This is an exciting project with the potential to show real change of one of the iconic fauna in the block. With any plantings hopefully we can see a change in occupancy which would be a very good news story.

There are no facilities at Baring Head so bring all you need for the day in terms of food and drink (lots of water), sunscreen and sunhat, waterproofs and fleece and be prepared to nip behind a bush if you need to go to the toilet!
