Make it a Happy New Year - Vote NO on TPP

When: 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 4

Where: Adam Clayton Powell State Office Bldg., 163 W. 125th St., just east of Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvd. (7th Ave)

Why: The Fast Track vote on the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement could take place in the first few weeks of January. Mr. Rangel, a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee and Trade Subcommittee, has said he will support the Fast Track bill. We ask him to VOTE NO on TPP and to encourage his colleagues to do the same.

Senator Baucus and House Ways and Means Chair Camp will file their Fast Track bill as soon as Congress re-convenes in January (around Jan. 8). 151 House Democrats and 23 Republicans have pledged to oppose the bill but more votes are needed. To stop Fast Track at least another 40 Representatives must vote NO - that's 180 Democrats and 50 Republicans total. THIS IS NOW A RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK!

Why oppose TPP and What is Fast Track: TPP is a trade pact being negotiated by several Pacific Rim countries, including the US, Canada, Mexico, Chile and Australia, which includes provisions related to environment, labor, agriculture and more. It has been negotiated in secret with access to details limited to executives of major corporations and a few government officials. Information obtained about TPP indicates that it will have a devastating environmental impact across the globe. Corporations will have unbridled power to supersede local labor and environmental protections and sue for threats to profits. TPP could provide a floodgate for increased fossil fuel exports with expansion of fracking and LNG production and resulting destruction of air, water and food supply quality. President Obama has requested that Congress approve Fast Track approval for the pact which limits Congress to a simple yes/no vote with no amendments and provides no way for Congress to insure trade pacts are in the public's best interest.
