Hello, new friends!

Let's restart this group up from the bottom. What is philosophy? What is science? What are the fundamentals of debate and constructive dialogue? What are the goals? How has discussion evolved in recent centuries? What has contributed to the evolution of dialogue? Let's learn from each other and try to answer some cool questions.

For those willing and able, bring a piece of information from psychology, communication sciences, philosophy, sociology, political science, anthropology, or history that can inform our discussion of discussion. During introductions, each person will have an opportunity to share their fact or recommendation.

Objective for next few meetings: To agree to a purpose and direction for the group, including to consider a process for constructive dialogue.

Agenda
30 mins: Introductions. Each person can share a fact or thought about dialogue
30 mins: Topics. Each person can suggest topics for future dialogues.
60 mins: Discussion. What would make debate better? What is the goal of debate? of discussion? of dialogue? What rules would help? What knowledge would help? Can we devise a protocol to facilitate our discussion goals?

For this first meeting, no pressure, but if you're ambitious, it could be useful to be familiar with:
A) Cognitive heuristics and errors (see a)
B) Informal logical fallacies (see b)
C) One of the following: Mercier and Sperber's Theory of Argumentative Theory of Reason, Deep Canvassing, Dialectics, Hegel's Dialectic, Schopenhauer's Dialectic.
