Discussion: Should the Right to Vote Be Universal? Exploring Democracy, Inclusion, and Limits

For decades, voting has been celebrated as a cornerstone of democracy: the right that gives citizens a voice in shaping the laws, policies, and leadership that affect their lives. In many countries, the principle of universal suffrage has been hard-won through struggles for equality and inclusion.

Yet the question of who should vote is increasingly debated. Should the right to vote truly be universal, or are there circumstances where limits make sense? Issues such as age, citizenship, criminal convictions, and civic knowledge raise complex questions about fairness, responsibility, and the health of democracy.

✅ Free entrance (just grab a drink at the bar to support the venue!)

This discussion invites us to think critically about democracy, representation, and societal trust. How do we balance inclusivity with accountability? Could limiting the franchise protect democratic institutions or does it risk excluding voices that should be heard?

Some guiding questions:
💬 Should everyone of legal age automatically have the right to vote, or are there reasonable exceptions?
💬 How do historical struggles for voting rights inform current debates on limits and inclusion?
💬 Do restrictions on voting strengthen or weaken democracy?
💬 What are the ethical, legal, and practical arguments for and against universal suffrage?
💬 Who benefits when voting is limited, and who is left out?

Join us for an open and thoughtful conversation where all perspectives are welcome!
