Animatronic Puppetry III

Puppeteers often control puppets in film through animatronic technology so this class will introduce cam mechanisms, electronic circuitry, and computer coding in the process of building and performing a karakuri puppet.

After customizing horse and rider puppets, participants will mount them on the pre-assembled cam mechanism and use Arduino code to make the horse and rider move in a set pattern. Then we will shoot the puppets against a green screen for compositing into a horse race video.

All participants (or their guardians) must sign a release form granting permission for their puppets, voices, and likenesses to appear in a video that will subsequently be available for viewing on social media.

Minimum age is 5. Children 7 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

$5 suggested donation for the maker space. Each participant must purchase a $15 kit that includes a pre-assembled cam mechanism plus customizable horse and rider puppets.
