Web3 Tech Talk #11 - Decentralizing Bitcoin Mining: Hashrate Heating

Details

Join Decentralized Hawaii for our eleventh gathering!

Topic: Hashrate Heating
Decentralization is the crux of Bitcoin's breakthrough and success as an immutable ledger and peer-to-peer electronic cash system. Mining builds the Bitcoin blockchain, and is widely known for its economic incentives (e.g. supply issuance, earning potential). However, decentralization in mining is equally as important. Through the mining process, a 51% attack where attackers can rewrite the Bitcoin blockchain is extremely costly and unlikely by any one party. However, as the computing power of the Bitcoin network centralizes around large-scale miners, a 51% attack becomes more realistic.

Bitcoin's proof-of-work consensus mechanism (i.e. how the Bitcoin network agrees on "the universal truth" of all its ledger transactions, without a 3rd party intermediary) has led to mining Bitcoin's notorious reputation for energy consumption and excessive heat production. But what if we used this energy twice? What if, instead of considering it a byproduct, we reconsidered heat as the product itself ("subsidized" by bitcoin)?

For this meetup, we'll discuss these questions and the concept of hashrate heating, as defined and explored in "Bitcoin Mining Heat Reuse" by Tyler Stevens. It is the first book to articulate various ways that bitcoin mining ASICs can be repurposed or designed to provide heat for a variety of consumers.

Speaker
Britney T-M first learned about the importance of decentralization through Bitcoin. Born and raised in Honolulu, the crucial balance between self-reliance and connectivity for island communities was of foremost importance as she volunteered in natural disaster response and worked as a workplace safety consultant. Currently, Britney works as an elderly caregiver as she builds Bitcoin and Nostr onboarding and educational resources for Hawai'i.
