Decluttering & organizing strategies for those considering relocation

Details

NOTE: The meeting is now on TUESDAY the 11th instead of Thursday the 13th to avoid possible weather problems on the 13th.

This is a meeting rescheduled from Wed. Feb 5. That meeting canceled because of predicted snow storm.

Original description from Jeanne:

As a lifelong clutterer, I've often chided myself internally for living such that if I needed to move in a hurry, it would be impossible to pack up quickly and efficiently. Now it's real. I'm planning to relocate to Syracuse, New York in the upcoming months. I've left my job in order to concentrate on the move. I don't have a hard deadline... and you know how deadly that can be to forward momentum!

My parents (in their 80s) have reached the life stage where I'd like to be closer to them. I've been in my current place since 2000 and have been accumulating since then, so I have a massive decluttering project on my hands. It will involve the emotionally tough task of disposing of some detritus of my defunct marriage as well as downsizing. I don't want to pay to move stuff that I don't need! How do I get organized for such a thing without allowing the "perfect to become the enemy of the good"? Is it possible to be too organized? How do I avoid moving my acquisition/hoarding mistakes with me?

Is anyone else is interested in discussing an approach to decluttering and organizing with an eye toward being relocation-ready… even if you don't have a move on your near-term calendar? Any ideas on more topics and questions that would fall under this umbrella?
