Should Flag Burning Be Illegal? (If you do not live in the US, I would be curious to hear if flag burning is permissible in your country, and whether you think it should be.)

Currently flag burning is protected under the 1st amendment in the United States. It is considered a form of symbolic speech/protest, provided the flag is the property of the person burning it. However the act of burning a flag could be viewed as a symbol of pure hatred (perhaps aggression) against a nation, and if it is the flag of your own country perhaps this could be interpreted as a renouncing of your citizenship.

Are there any forms of non-violent protest that could function as a symbol for domestic terrorism? Not talking about direct threats of violence against anyone, but a performative act such as burning a flag, or creating images depicting violence against political leaders, etc. Should a line be drawn before the burning of a flag is permitted?

Should we let people into our country who burn our flag in protest? What if we let them into our country, they become a citizen, and then they burn our flag within our borders? Should we still consider this protected speech under the first amendment.

My take: flag burning should remain legal. I see no harm. Happy to discuss further though!
