Reconnaissance and threat intelligence gathering using Geofencing - Peter Desifiges

Summary:

In this talk, we will be discussing what is geofence monitoring and how it can be used to monitor assets and threat intel and reconnaissance gathering. A summary of open source tools that are available will be shown, followed by a walkthrough of an automated geofencing monitor created with Maltego, A visual link analysis tool, showcasing the dashboard, intelligence that can be collected, features, challenges and "TODO" for this proof of concept.

Peter Desfigies is a Security Consultant at TELUS Communications Inc. where he works with a team of other operations analysts to proactively investigate and analyze customer traffic, while also providing threat intelligence on attacks, campaigns, and zero-days in order to protect customer’s environment and enhance their security posture. During his time at TELUS, he has worked with a variety of teams providing LAN, WAN, Telco, Security and hardware break/fix support, and now Security Analysis for government and corporate customer. Prior to TELUS, he worked for 12 years in IT operation roles to provide backbone network support including DNS, SMTP, POP, dialup, T1 to OC12 , and Ethernet at various companies, with the bulk of his experience at UUNET / MCI.

Malware Researching - The whys & hows by a reverse engineer - Yevgney Kulakov

Summary:

In this talk Yevgeny will discuss how one can get into malware researching, what are some of the skills required to research and investigate malicious software efficiently and how to continuously stay on top of the game in the cat and mouse game of malware. He will share the hows, whys and the ways this can be done. In addition, Yevgeny will dive into malware researching itself, the challenges in the field and what should be expected in malware researching positions.
Yevgney will also share his experience and stories gained over the years from working in the field.

Yevgeny Kulakov started his career as a computer vision software developer. Seeking for new challenges he started to reverse engineer malwares at Trusteer & Seculert. His research interests lay in binary and code analysis & automation and sandbox development and malicious behaviour modelling.

My Path To Becoming an IT Security Professional - Brandon Krieger

Summary:

In this talk, Brandon shares his journey and what he has learned over the past two years as he works towards becoming an IT Security professional. Why did he choose IT Security, what path to take, what are some of the challenges, and what he wishes was different in the IT Security industry for newcomers. This discussion will help answer some questions and help you working towards a successful career in IT Security.

Brandon Krieger started his career in IT in 2000 when he decided to go to triOS College and completed a diploma in Network Specialist. Brandon worked for EDS Innovations, Management Board of Secretariat, and the Ministry of Finance. Brandon opened up his own company KNSS Consulting Group Inc. a local boutique marketing agency based in Toronto. in 2016 Brandon saw the increase of security breaches with his clients and decided to make the transition to become an information security professional.
