Algiers, 1938.
Meursault, a quiet and unassuming man in his early thirties, attends his mother's funeral without shedding a tear. The next day, he begins an affair with his colleague, Marie, and quickly falls back into his daily routine. But his everyday life is disrupted by his neighbor, Raymond Sintès, who draws Meursault into his shady dealings. Until, on a scorching day, a fateful event takes place on the beach… When Meursault appears in court, he seems to be judged not so much for his actions, but for his emotionless appearance. Can someone be sentenced to death for not crying at their mother's funeral?
L’Étranger is based on the world-famous 1942 novel by Albert Camus, one of the best-selling French novels of all time. The book was adapted into a film by François Ozon (Swimming Pool), with the approval and supervision of Camus's daughter. The leading role of Meursault is played by Benjamin Voisin (Été 85), with Rebecca Marder, Pierre Lottin, Denis Lavant and Swann Arlaud also in the role.
'Director Ozon finally gives the Arab a name' - VPRO Cinema (★★★★)
'The restrained black-and-white images feel as compact and layered as Camus” sentences' - de Volkskrant (★★★★)2 attendees
