DEEP DIVE: Robert Altman's Overlapping Voices

Details

**This is a watch-at-home and discuss in-person event!**

I toiled and troubled and lost sleep, like a heroine in a melodrama, as to whom I should dedicate my next DEEP DIVE. I tearfully sifted through the list of major directors and absolute masters of the artform to no avail: some too arthouse, some too old, some too contemporary, some already have several books dedicated to them. And then I had a realization that one of my biggest blind spots has been an American master all along who's influenced major contemporary directors like Wes Anderson, PTA, and Richard Linklater: Robert Altman

For this deep dive we're going to be looking at some of his most acclaimed and well-known works and discover together the oft-satirical meaning among all the giant ensembles and the overlapping dialogue that Altman's known for. I've personally only seen Gosford Park and A Prairie Home Companion so I'm going along this journey afresh. If you've seen all these films, you're still welcome. We'd love to hear your thoughts and a rewatch never hurts!

I've listed 4 films as usual for the official discussion, but will also include a bonus list since his filmography is quite large and equally varied in case people are interested. Please watch the films before the discussion event. If you can only watch a couple of them you're still welcome to join us for the discussion! Please feel free to reach out to me if you cannot find any of the films!
