READ & WATCH: Making Movies + The Verdict

Details
I've long wanted to understand the filmmaking process better, so let's try something a bit different: a deep dive into film craft.
We’ll be reading Sidney Lumet’s Making Movies—a short (218-page) classic on the art of directing—and pairing it with a viewing of The Verdict (1982), one of Lumet’s most powerful films and one he references throughout the book. It’s a unique way to explore not just what a film is about, but how it’s made.
We'll meet to discuss our thoughts on Thursday, June 19, at Edgewater Public Market. If the weather is nice, we will grab a picnic table outside. If it's not, we will meet at Barquentine Brewing Company, which is adjacent to Edgewater Public Market.
Where to find MAKING MOVIES by Sidney Lumet:
- Kindle or Paperback on Amazon ($4.99 or $10.44)
Where to watch THE VERDICT (1982, dir. Sidney Lumet):
***
OPTIONAL: Watch one more Lumet film before we meet.
Here's a chance to explore his work on your own terms. At the event, we’ll invite everyone to briefly share what they watched and at least one thing they noticed, appreciated, or questioned. I've made a shortlist of his most popular films:
- 12 Angry Men (1957)
- Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
- Network (1976)
- Serpico (1973)
- Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007)
- Murder on the Orient Express (1974)
- Running on Empty (1988)
- Fail Safe (1964)
Most are available to stream or rent online via major platforms.
