DEEP DIVE: Lost & Found in the 21st Century
Details
For whatever reason--maybe it's that quasi-existence in a general sort of hellscape that we're all experiencing at the moment--I've been thinking a lot about Millennium Mambo and the feelings that it conveyed--sort of this mix of anxiety and freedom upon the arrival of the new millennium. There isn't a film quite like it.
A common thread among all of us is of course that listlessness and a constant search for a meaning to all of this/that, or an anchor in this chaotic world. I wanted to explore more of those thoughts but in filmic form. So, I came up with 3 films, spanning across 3 different countries and across the 2.5 decades so far of the 21st century. Let's dive in!
The films:
Millennium Mambo (2001):
directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien
Synopsis: The ethereally beautiful Vicky recalls her romances with Hao Hao and Jack in the neon-lit clubs of Taipei.
Stream: Prime, YoutubeTV, or INTERNET ARCHIVES (free)
Margaret - Extended Director's Cut (2011):
directed by Kenneth Lonergan
Synopsis: A high-school student feels responsible for a fatal traffic accident and tries to make amends.
Stream: Prime, AppleTV
Return to Seoul (2022):
directed by Davy Chou
Synopsis: A twenty-five-year-old French woman returns to Korea, the country she was born in before being adopted by a French couple, for the very first time. She decides to track down her biological parents, but her journey takes a surprising turn.
Stream: Prime, AppleTV
