It’s June, which is Pride month (let’s be real, Pride month is every month).

We all know from cinema that LGBTQ+ folks tend to have complicated relationships, to say the least, with their family. Just as a blanket theme, I wanted to take a look at three films that offer a small glimpse into these relationships, joyous, painful, or otherwise.

Let’s dive in!

Films:

  • The Long Day Closes, Terence Davies (1992)
Synopsis: A lyrical reverie about a young Liverpool boy coming of age in the 1950s among his loving family and the austere Catholic Church as he enters the rigors of school, nurtures a bedazzled love of the movies and longs for companionship.
Stream: Criterion Channel, MUBI, FREE version HERE
  • The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros, Aurarus Solito (2005)
Synopsis: A young boy falls in love with a handsome policeman who is investigating his family's criminal activities.
Stream: Prime Video, FREE version HERE
  • Laurence Anyways, Xavier Dolan (2012)
Synopsis: A drama that charts ten years in a transgender woman's relationship with her lover.
    Stream: Prime, YouTube, Kanopy

Please try to watch all the films! If you can only watch a few, you’re still welcome to join! I usually try to find the free versions of these films and if I do find them, I’ll post links in the comments!
