DEEP DIVE: A Certain Satisfaction of Erotic Thrillers
Details
Mabel, stop clutching those pearls! We're watching Erotic Thrillers.
I find Erotic Thrillers as a genre to be so fascinating because in a way, this genre often reflects deeply held, perhaps even puritanical values that we all grew up with. I feel that in cinema sex positivity has always been met with a degree of derision especially when it involves women or the marginalized. There's also that whole discussion about what's "too much" as well as exploration of male insecurity in these films. Tack on the AIDS epidemic of the 80s and 90s as well as the current times' weird sexual prudency, and baby, we got a stew goin'. We'll also be discussing at its decline as we reach the 21st century. (Also this is a chance for me to rewatch Crash and discuss it!!!) It's safe to say these are NOT safe for work.
