Summer of Jeanne Moreau - The Bride Wore Black (1968)

Jules & Jim was really fun, so let's watch another Truffaut / Moreau collaboration, in a very different vein. The Bride Wore Black is Truffaut doing Hitchcock, with Jeanne Moreau as a bride who is widowed on her wedding day and sets her sights on revenge. Here is some great table setting from Turner Classic Movies.

This is definitely lighter fare than we've been watching this summer, but it's stylish and fun. And it's probably most interesting in conversation with Hitchcock, so you might watch, rewatch, or think about the Hitchcock film of your choice as a pairing. Truffaut made The Bride Wore Black just a few years after he famously interviewed Hitchcock in 1962 (a conversation which was transcribed into a book in 1967).
Some Hitchcockian suggestions:

• Shadow of a Doubt is, like TBWB, about evil hiding in plain sight.
• Vertigo, like TBWB, is about obsession disguised as love.
• The composer of TBWB, Bernard Herrmann, also scored The Wrong Man, Vertigo, and Psycho.
• Both TBWB and Rear Window were adapted from a Cornell Woolrich novel
