Maryland Mountain Group A
Details
Ride Overview
- Location: Hidden Treasure Trailhead, Black Hawk, CO
- Distance: Approx. 12–13 miles (via laps/variations)
- Elevation Gain: ~1,400 - 1,500 feet
- Difficulty: Intermediate (Blue/Green)
- Highlights: Historic Gilpin Tramway, Easy Money, Millsite, scenic views of the Continental Divide, and abandoned mines.
- The Route Description.
- Start at the Hidden Treasure Trailhead and begin with a gentle climb on the wide, historic Gilpin Tramway (green) to warm up.
- After about 1 mile, veer right onto the Millsite Trail. Millsite is an intermediate (blue) singletrack that winds through dense pine forests and offers a steady, pleasant climb toward the upper mountain.
- The Ridge: Upper Easy Money Millsite will eventually connect you to the top section of Easy Money. Take a left onto Easy Money to continue the climb toward the summit (9,200'), enjoying views of the Continental Divide. Note: Avoid the "Hard Money" and "Powder Keg" turnoffs, as these are technical, bike-only downhill trails.
- The Descent:
- Easy Money (Downhill)
- From the summit area, enjoy the fast and flowing Easy Money trail as it winds back down. This is a blue-rated, bike-optimized, multi-use trail featuring optional rock features and smooth dirt.
- The Loop Variation: Claim Jumper & Paymaster.
- About halfway down Easy Money, look for the intersection with Claim Jumper. Take this trail to add some fun, intermediate flow to the ride. Claim Jumper eventually leads down to the Paymaster Trail, which parallels the lower valley.
- Return: Gilpin Tramway
- Follow Paymaster to the Historic Gilpin Tramway, which will take you back to the Hidden Treasure Trailhead.
- Tips for this Ride
- Stay Blue/Green: Avoid signs for "Hard Money" and "Powder Keg" to keep the route intermediate.
- Traffic: While the trail system is largely open, Easy Money is bi-directional; keep an eye out for other users.
- Parking: The Hidden Treasure Trailhead has limited space; an overflow lot is just down the road.
- Altitude: You will be riding up to 9,200 feet, so bring plenty of water and be prepared for fast-changing weather.
- Map Reference: Refer to the MTB Project "Complete Tour" or the Trailforks "12.4mi Tour" for digital tracking of this specific area.
