Dave Sherk led us on this hike this past weekend (6/14). It was so good that we are doing it again in a few weeks, on June 27th. Hopefully this time, with even less mud and no snow on the trails, and with more wildflowers (which were just coming out on the 14th). The trail is between 6 and 6.5 miles in length (various apps provide different mileages for this lollipop route) with a total elevation gain of 2,000 feet. This time, we will take a few minutes to explore the mining ruins off to the side of the trail, on the way down.

This is a classic Colorado hike that takes you through plenty of shady forests for the first few miles and ends with spectacular views of the peaks around the Berthoud Pass area as well as surrounding mountain lakes.

From All Trail's description:

Butler Gulch Trail is located near Red Mountain in Arapaho National Forest. It is a popular trail for winter backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, and summer hiking. It’s also a fantastic spot for wildflower viewing where you can spot Columbines, Indian Paintbrushes, Elephants Head and Parry’s Primrose. This route also features waterfalls, shady Spruce and Fir forests and old mines. Make sure you being plenty of water and sun protection as well, as much of this trail is fully exposed to the sun.

Please bring the usual stuff (hat, sunglasses, water, sunscreen, and a snack). It would be a good idea to bring hiking poles. When you come off of Jones Pass Road into the trailhead, park at the upper of the two lots, or along the road. There aren't any restroom facilities at the trailhead so plan accordingly.
