Hands On CRISPR Cas-9 Workshop!
Please register on Eventbrite to attend this event: Space limited to the first 8 who register! Denver Biolabs is happy to offer you an opportunity to get an in-depth and hand-on look at the groundbreaking genetic engineering technology, CRISPR-Cas9. In this workshop you will learn how CRISPR systems work in nature and how they are leveraged in modern genetic engineering techniques. We will also discuss basic design considerations for creating guide RNA sequences and some of the creative ways CRISPR-Cas9 is being used in current research. During the hands-on portion of this workshop we will be using CRISPR-Cas9 to edit the genome of E.coli to allow it to survive on a growth medium it could not normally tolerate. Our experiment will attempt to reproduce the work in this paper: All materials and supplies for the workshop are included in the registration cost. The CRISPR-Cas9 supplies were generously donated by The ODIN (The Open Discovery Institute), which is dedicated to making Science and Technology Research more accessible.

What we're about

Denver Biolabs is an open discussion and work group of individuals interested in the emerging DIYbio culture in the Denver/Boulder area. We are interested in building a community that facilitates open education, collaboration, and research and development of technologies exploring various aspects of Synthetic Biology, Bioinformatics, Biomimicry, Biotechnology, Bio-Inspired Design, DIYBio, Biohacking, Bioprinting, and other bio-related topics.

In our initial meetings we will discuss directions for the group including collaborations, projects, readings, and the development of wet lab experiments. The meetup is open to anyone wanting to learn more about biology and how to work with biological materials in a creative and fun environment.

Members should be motivated self-starters with a strong interest in DIY-Bio, creating, innovating, and learning from others. Members don't need a specific skill set or background to participate, and different perspectives and contributions are highly valued.

This group will have a "bias toward action" and members will be developing and doing a lot of hands-on activities, gaining skills (machining, 3D printing, programming, etc.), learning from and working with other group members, and having fun.

Denver Biolabs meetups will include a mixture of hands-on projects, invited speakers/experts in a related field of study, and skill-centered workshops. Members will help shape the typical activities of the meetups and build the culture of this community here in Denver/Boulder.
