18xx is a 50-year-old board game genre of epic economic games... It's a niche with a dedicated following. It includes hundreds of game-variants of the same core game : realistic and historical train company stock market speculation, exchanges in company control, a need to buy expensive trains, planning&timing, track/tile-laying and balancing personal money vs. company assets. 1861 is a basic 18xx game with only a merger-rule and nationalised railway mechanism added to the bare minimum.
