Philanthropy and the Built Expression
A Provocation around the nature of Patronage, and how this shapes our built environment. The talk tries to open up this as a discussion, to expand the territory around the changing face of philanthropy and patronage, and what this may result in. Is the changing face of patronage changing the way we live? What are emergent forms of sponsorship and what kind of projects are they spawning?

Ayaz Basrai studied Industrial design at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, and after a short stint working in Dubai moved back to Mumbai to set up a built environment studio with his brother Zameer, an architect from CEPT / MIT as an independent design studio specialising in the design and creation of built environments, ranging from hospitality and entertainment, to film and production environments, exhibitions, installations, institutional and architectural environments.
Currently dabbling in various projects from Hospitality projects like Bars, Clubs and Restaurants, to Installation Art, from Institutional Architecture to Heritage conservation around his home in Bandra, to working on Illustration and 3D printing projects, he juggles the many diverse schizophrenic projects the city tosses up, in a desperate attempt to make sense of it all.
The Busride prides itself in being a team of architects, interior and industrial designers, who look for solutions from the macro to the micro, from the slightly mad to the totally insane. The studio’s work is guided more by chaos than by order, and this reflects in its wide and varied undertakings. From working on high visibility commercial venues balanced with critical writing and theory initiatives, the Studio’s work is a wide swinging pendulum.
