Technology presents a unique opportunity for online tricksters and marketing masterminds. In this discussion, we’ll talk about Dark Patterns, user interfaces intentionally designed to confuse, deceive and exploit. David Beitey from JCU’s eResearch Centre leads a look into:

  • What Dark Patterns are
  • What types exist
  • How to spot them and how they succeed
  • How they continually shape your online experiences, and
  • What to do about it as a designer or a user

We’ll call out the big gorillas like Facebook, Spotify, Airbnb, Booking.com and everyone’s least-favourite airline Jetstar, and look at how they guilt, convince, panic and shame you into doing what they want.

Come with a keen interest in UI design and leave with an awareness of patterns you might think twice about implementing.
