In 2025, the Free Software Foundation celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Today, we live in a world more threatened by hostile technology than ever before. Big Tech has run amok, and the issues of ‘software freedom’ – long seen as a niche or technical issue – are now hot-button issues in our politics and society.

America is home to Silicon Valley, where some of the largest tech companies reside. Despite that, it can often seem as if there’s no real organized resistance left in this country willing to fight on behalf of tech that puts people over profit. Dig deep enough and you’ll see a history of people willing to fight back. How can we carry free software activism into the future?
