October DJUG: Mo' Money, Mo' Problems: JSR-354 and Representing Money in Java

Details

The October DJUG meeting will be at Grand Circus Detroit, centrally located in downtown Detroit at 1570 Woodward Avenue. Meet on the 3rd floor.

Mo' Money, Mo' Problems: JSR-354 and the Trials and Tribulations of Representing Money in Java
Money is, for better or for worse, a big part of our lives. One of the major deficiencies of the Java Development Kit has been the lack of a standard type to represent money amounts like $125.00 or 89,20€. Numeric primitives are ill-suited for the purpose, and using BigDecimal addresses only part of the problem of using double primitives for the purpose. Making one's own type from scratch is good except it duplicates the efforts that have already been made with third party libraries and the JSR-354 proposal.

Speaker Bio
The speaker for this meeting is our own DJUG member Alonso del Arte.

Al is a software developer who has created a testing framework from scratch, written a book about test-driven development, and uses Java to explore algebraic number theory, as well as more mundane topics like money.
