http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/7/3/8/event_60338712.jpegStudy after study indicates that consumers are heavily embracing the use of mobile technology and are interested in being able to utilize their mobile devices to find convenience and improve the productivity of their lives. As more and more demands are made on their time, they are seeking ways to engage with companies in ways that are convenient for them; chief among those methods of engagement is mobile. As a result, an increasing number of companies both large and small are beginning to look at mobile marketing as an option – but still, in a majority of cases, they stop at the ‘look’ and are not yet ready to implement.
So why aren’t a larger number of businesses yet embracing mobile as part of their marketing strategy? Several of the reasons typically given are:
-
they assume it’s cost-prohibitive and that if they don’t have a substantial budget to invest in a mobile effort that they won’t be able to enter the mobile space
-
they don’t know where to start or how to integrate it into their overall marketing strategy
-
they assume it’s extremely complicated and that it requires massive amounts of time and effort
-
they assume mobile is just a passing fad and it will soon lose the interest of consumers
However, all of these assumptions are incorrect; mobile is extremely cost-effective, easy to integrate, very user-friendly - and definitely NOT a passing fad!
Marketers need to understand, for consumers, mobile unlocks the power to interact with, find, or demand the content they want at exactly the time and place they want it. Mobile fills the gap between layers of static, broadcast or stationary media. It fills the gap between the online and offline experience… and between the consumer and the businesses they want to interact with – when they want to interact with them.
Consider the following:
-
There are 302.9 million mobile subscribers in the United States. Stated another way, that’s 96% of the population that can be interacted with directly! CTIA
-
Mobile devices will pass PCs as the access device of choice by 2013. Gartner (http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=120590)
-
One-third of mobile searches are local in nature. Google (http://www.mobilemarketingwatch.com/google-says-local-intent-is-behind-one-third-of-mobile-searches-5800/)
-
Mobile retail will reach $12 billion by 2014. Juniper Research (http://www.marketingvox.com/mobile-retail-expected-to-top-12b-in-14-046408/)
-
53% of mobile users would share their location to receive more relevant ads. Mashable (http://mashable.com/2010/05/12/mobile-advertising-study/)
-
Mobile coupon redemption is 10x that of traditional coupons. Borrell Associates (http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=126351)
Additionally, a recent study by BrandAnywhere indicated that 50% of consumers would give preference to a company based on whether or not they have a mobile site. The percentage was even larger for higher-value products and services.
