Focused Workshop: Fictional Holiday
Details
Hello science fiction and fantasy writers!
This week, we're having another focused workshop at Justin's house. As usual, first-timers are welcome; don't feel weird about going to a stranger's house -- just come in and go with the flow.
This one has homework, meaning we'll discuss what people bring. But you are also welcome to come empty handed and just contribute your thoughts on the other’s work.
The first 15 minutes of the meeting will be dedicated to saying hello and waiting for latecomers, then we'll dive in. Visit our Discord Server to learn more and get in touch.
The Homework:
The theme this time is related to worldbuilding. Specifically, we'll look at how the residents of your setting celebrate a fictional holiday.
The holiday season may be over, but that doesn't mean that we can't take a peek at how your setting in particular celebrates a special time of the year. These holidays might be as broad as a global tradition, or as limited as a personal anniversary. Examples include:
*A nation-wide celebration of that nation's founding
*The birthday of a prominent figure from that setting's history
*A group of war veterans meeting at a bar to commemorate their fallen comrades
*A ceremony that used to seal away a vicious demon, but in the modern day is just an excuse to dress up
*A megacorporation allowing its employees to have their one day of relaxation per year
Your assignment is this: bring one printed page total describing your fictional holiday. The amount of detail can vary, but try and consider such factors as:
*What time of year is it? Is it a consistent day, or a flexible date depending on circumstances?
*How is this day is typically celebrated? Is it basically a normal tradition, or is there a unique science fiction/fantasy element to it?
*How is this holiday viewed in the broader context of your society? Is it universally revered, or does it celebrate concepts that some view to be outdated?
Get creative, and don't be afraid to explore the possibilities that your setting provides. One thing is certain, this is sure to be a workshop worth celebrating!
