The Infrastructure BASH

Details

Hi folks, it's the final BASH before we take a break for the summer. This event is loosely based around the theme of 'Infrastructure' and features three varied and intriguing talks from experts in their fields. Whether you are hard at work from home, or trying to relax into a staycation, please join us and contribute to the discussion.

Data Storage for Big Science in the Exascale Era
(Dr. Michael Davis)

CERN, the European laboratory for particle physics, has been at the forefront of computing for over 60 years. The imagination of physicists has always been a step ahead of the available technology, forcing the laboratory to constantly innovate and invent new technologies to process, store and distribute the data coming from its vast machines and detectors.

In the last decade or so the computing landscape has changed considerably: today High Energy Physics is no longer alone in needing to crunch massive datasets. Other sciences, such as biology, have become data-driven, and data intensive computing is ubiquitous in the commercial world. This presents the physics community with new opportunities and challenges (besides those arising from building ever bigger and more powerful particle-smashing machines). In this talk I will paint CERN's data storage journey in broad brush-strokes and outline some of the plans for the decade ahead.

Azure is Hybrid by Design with Azure Stack HCI
(Lisa Clark)

Microsoft's tagline is “Azure is Hybrid by design” and it really is. This is demonstrated by the Azure Stack Portfolio and Azure Arc offerings. In this session I’ll provide an overview of Azure’s Hybrid offerings and we’ll take a closer look at the newest member of the Azure Stack portfolio - Azure Stack HCI.

Well Architected Serverless Infrastructure with CDK
(Gerald Stewart and Peter Reid)

In this talk Gerald and Peter will talk about the AWS Well Architected Framework, the Cloud Development Kit (CDK) and CDK Patterns; how they’re being applied at Liberty IT and Liberty Mutual and the value these can provide to engineers to build world class, well-engineered solutions at a rapid pace by leveraging the learnings of colleagues, and the open source community.

Gerald and Peter will share their individual experiences from building well-architected applications themselves, and enabling their development within Liberty Mutual & Liberty IT, and talk about the value they feel these present to engineers.
