DevOps Exchange July - Google, OVO Energy, PwC

After a couple of months break, we're pleased to share with you all that The DevOps Exchange London is back on the 26th July.

Hosted by PwC at their office space on the Embankment in London, we will be joined by 3 household names who are currently dominating today's tech market.

Tech giant Google will talk us through 'loosely-coupled architecture' beyond APIs, logs/events, and async comms. They'll will explain what's really involved in delivering true 'loose-coupling' and exactly how a platform can make things easier for those building applications and systems.

Next up we have leading energy supplier, OVO Energy who will share their journey in developing POL (Payment Orchestration Layer) at OVO, which started as a cards/BACS payment interface at OVO but has since evolved into a comprehensive many-to-many payment routing system, which is now integrated across various companies in the OVO Group.

Our third and final speaker will be from PwC themselves and will focus on DevOps and Data Engineering and how they've used native AWS services including AWS Glue, DataBrew and S3 to build their innovation data platform.

Our usual format will be followed, with the 3 x 20 minute talks starting at 7pm.

7:00pm: Richard Bannister, Technology Practice Lead @ Google

"Scratching beneath the surface of 'Loosely-Coupled Architecture"

Research from the DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) team shows that Loosely-Coupled Architecture is a technical capability that helps support Continuous Delivery which in turn predicts success in the areas of Team Satisfaction, Delivery Performance, Operational Performance, and Organisational Performance.

Just what is 'Loosely-Coupled Architecture' beyond APIs, logs/events, and async comms though? What's really involved in delivering true 'loose-coupling' and how can a platform make things easier for those building applications and systems.

At the end of this talk, you should leave with an understanding of problem space decomposition, architectural ideals for teams to make large-scale changes without fine-grained coordination-with or permission-of others, and how platform-level 'products' can help enable it all.

Bio: Richard Bannister's the UK Customer Engineering Technology Practice Lead for Application Architecture at Google Cloud and he works out of Manchester while living in East Lancashire.

7:20pm: Romans Malinovskis @ OVO Energy

"Building a Developer-Centric DevOps Culture at OVO"

In his compelling presentation, Romans will recount his experience developing POL at OVO. POL, the Payment Orchestration Layer, was initially a Cards/BACS payment interface. It has since evolved into a comprehensive many-to-many payment routing system, integrated across various companies in the OVO Group, handling the complete payment lifecycle - allocation, payments, refunds, and reconciliations. Over the past 12 months, POL has impressively processed £3 million.

As a DevOps/Cloud engineer in a team of 30, Romans' talk will centre on OVO's unique developer-centric culture. He will illuminate how this approach enabled his team to iteratively refine their release practices and cloud infrastructure from an early prototype into an enterprise-level cloud solution.

Bio: Romans embarked on his IT journey part-time in the 10th grade in 1998. With roles ranging from system admin to full-stack web developer and CTO, Romans now leads as a DevOps and Cloud Engineering expert.

7:40pm - Sanjay Patel @ PwC
"DevOps and Data Engineering"

PwC will talk about how they've used native AWS services including AWS Glue, DataBrew and S3 to build their innovation data platform. They will talk about how they’ve implemented workflows and tooling that enables them to work in an iterative fashion.

They will also present how they’ve used the platform created to generate a geospatial dataset that they can use to build API and frontend applications for innovative data presentation.

Bio: Sanjay is an experienced PwC software architect and has worked on various projects throughout his career, including working with AWS and Azure to create microservices and data platforms as a software engineer.
