🎤 Hitchhiker’s Guide for Software Architects: Legacy Migration with the Strangler-Fig Pattern

⏳ Agenda:
* 1800: Doors open + Snacks 🍕 + Drinks 🍹 + Networking 💬
* 1900: Talk from Marc
* Afterwards until around 2130: Q&A, Networking, Drinks

📄 Session Abstract:
Legacy code is an omnipresent challenge in software development, often causing missed deadlines, frustration within the team, and customer dissatisfaction.

In this talk, you can dive into the journey of a software architect migrating a matured and complex application based on a Microsoft-stack, with the stakes being high on the backdrop of a previously failed big-bang migration.

I will show how applying Gregor Hohpe’s “Software Architect Elevator” concept helps steer through these obstacles and how developers can collaborate more effectively with architects along the way.
The session also covers the Strangler-Fig Pattern, a proven strategy for incrementally replacing legacy systems without disrupting day-to-day operations.

Besides learning about legacy-migrations, the insights provided can help to understand architects better and set you up with techniques for turning a troubled rewrite into a sustainable success.

🙋 Speaker:
Dr. Marc Schuh is a Principal Consultant at TNG Technology Consulting in Munich. In addition to managing customer projects, ranging from the development of a Data Lake in the AWS Cloud to the migration of legacy applications (e.g. Visual Basic) to Azure, he works on various innovative prototype projects together with the Innovation Hacking. Among them are the automated technical analysis of high-performance canoe athletes of the German National Team, and experiments with a Brain Computer Interface.

Prior to his start at TNG, Marc Schuh received his doctorate in physics and was a wheelchair sprinter over 400m at three Paralympic Games, in addition to being a World Champion and holding the European record.
