Details

Darragh Bailey - Systems Software Engineer at HPE

Darragh supports the CI infrastructure and pipelines for HPE OneSphere, and has worked on CI/CD related tasks for 14 years, and has seen changes from Nightly builds, periodic, build on change, to gated CI, as well as the associated changes in technologies and tools through out

Presentation: Why we do CI the way we do
Ever team, organization and company seems to have a set of preferred tools for CI that are different. But it's not just the CI scheduler that informs how CI is done, it's everything from source control capabilities, testing approaches, infrastructure and culture all inform and affect CI and the rewards gained.

While he will touch on some of the tooling, the main focus will be on the "why" these tools were adopted; taking past experiences from previous projects and identifying the problems encountered, Darragh will describe how subsequent approaches to CI were informed.

Starting from a time when nightly builds, which were regularly broken, was a common pattern, Darragh, will go through examples of approaches that worked and failed, how this informed subsequent projects, and ultimately the reasons behind insisting on config-as-code for CI/CD, gated branch merging, and impact of single builds versus multiple smaller (common to microservices).

It's the "why" process/tools are chosen that is important to learn from, rather than the tooling used. This should allow you to assess what you need and whether there is something that will work better for your use case.

CI/CD Pipelines Panel Discussion

This will be followed by a panel discussion on CI/CD Pipelines, the panel with consist of Darragh Bailey (HPE), Martin Hegarty (Avaya), Mark McCormick (Cisco), and Anthony O'Gorman (IBM).

The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panel, and gain some insight into their experiences with pipelines.
