HomeLab with HA Kubernetes and GitOps

by Oliver Wulff

Do you maintain a sophisticated IT infrastructure at home including features like home automation, adblocking, NAS, and a firewall? Have you considered your Recovery Time Objective (RTO) in the event of a disaster? This presentation aims to showcase the creation of an automated and highly available Kubernetes cluster within a home environment. This will be achieved by harnessing the power of Ansible, GitLab/GitHub, K3s, and ArgoCD through GitOps practices (almost fully). While high-availability storage, secrets management and certificate handling pose challenges, this session will comprehensively address these aspects.

Moreover, the presentation will delve into the deployment of over a dozen applications. This will be accomplished using either Helm or Kustomize, enabling customized deployment through GitOps without necessitating a Continuous Deployment (CD) pipeline. The first part of the session will concentrate on the provisioning of Virtual Machines (VMs), Kubernetes, and ArgoCD using Ansible in conjunction with GitLab pipelines. Subsequently, the focus will shift to provisioning infrastructure-related applications such as storage management and security. This involves utilizing Kubernetes secrets and certificates.

To wrap up, all applications will be deployed to enhance the utilization of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, exemplified by NAS setups, in a secure manner using Traefik.
