How Cloud Development Environments Are Central to a DevX-Focused DevSecOps Strategy by Laurent Balmelli

The use of Cloud Development Environments (CDEs) is becoming a staple of an efficient DevOps process with the appearance of self-served infrastructure platforms from major vendors such as GitHub Codespaces and Google Workstations. In that setting, an CDE delivers a ready-touse development environment, that can be accessed and authored via a cloud IDE (i.e. browser-based) or a local IDE via SSH. Beside yielding benefits around the developer's experience (DevX), I explain how CDEs can also become a mechanism to deploy security best-practices while keeping DevX intact. In particular, I explain how a DevSecOps strategy significantly benefits from CDEs across a variety of scenarios such as data loss prevention, code security and access control to development resources. In addition, I show how important development metrics such as the average build time and others can be computed in real-time across a workforce thanks to CDEs online accessibility.
