DevOps & Platform Engineering MeetUp

Details

We are hosting the second DevOps & Platform Engineering MeetUp on Wednesday September 27th and are inviting you to join us!

This event will be bigger and better than before, with more guest speakers, longer talks and an exciting new event space!

Taking place in the Academy building on Pearse St, Dublin 2, we have rented two stunning spaces for the evening. We will be in the Snug space for the talks and then for the networking and fun afterwards, we will move into the Lookout terrace which has 360 views of Dublin’s city skyline!

It will be another informative evening, featuring talks by expert speakers on the latest developments and best practices in DevOps and Platform Engineering.

Agenda for the evening..
There will be 3 guest speakers on the night, each speaker will have about 20 - 30 minutes and will have a Q&A at the end. Once the talks are finished, we can move out to the Lookout terrace which has 360 views of Dublin’s city skyline, where we will have some pizza and drinks and plenty of time for networking with everyone and taking in the views.

Speaker 1: Callum Scott - Principal DevOps Lead currently working in Amach.

Callum has been working in the infrastructure sphere for 15 years.
He has extensive experience in managing large scale systems on both physical and cloud platforms, including internet connectivity and entertainment systems for the hospitality industry, and managing the infrastructure for the #1 global video delivery platform used by the automotive industry.
Current he uses his experience in working on large on premises deployments, and large cloud deployments to assist companies in effectively migrating and modernising workloads in to AWS; and helping position them to adopt a cloud native approach post migration.

Callum’s topic:

As organisations migrate their workloads onto cloud platforms, the number of people that need to effect change, and the number of accounts that change can snowball.
Not all of those people that need or want to affect change on the system are experts in infrastructure as code. The rate of change can be high, and modifications that affect interconnected systems maintained by multiple teams needs to be visible. In this talk Callum will demonstrate one approach that allows a large team (or even a large number of teams) affect change on cloud platforms safely and transparently.

Speaker 2: Laura Varga - Principal DevOps Engineer in Globalization Partners.

Laura is an experienced technologist, having worked as a DevOps engineer before the term was even consecrated. She has worked as a software developer, in production engineering, platform engineering as well as SRE. Through the various engineering and leadership positions that Laura has held across multiple industries, from high frequency trading, to e-commerce for the biggest company in the world and also the startup(s) world, she has seen all there is to see of development in the DevOps/SRE/platform engineering fields.

Laura’s topic:

Having worked to build the platform / devex for multiple organisations, Laura has seen and taken different approaches every time. For her talk, Laura will present an overview of each platform and discuss the similarities & differences between them. She will talk through how they built a platform based on Hashicorp Nomad for jet.com, then a cloud-agnostic (huge) platform based on Kubernetes for Walmart, and now they're building an AWS multi-account serverless platform in her current role at G-P.

Speaker 3: William Oldwin - Will's impressive career in IT spans three decades, where he has been at the leading edge of technological change throughout that time.

An expert in the DevOps space, William is currently the Director of Cloud and Digital at Amach and will join us on the night to discuss Infrastructure as Code tooling.

When: Wednesday September 27th from 6:00pm, talks starting at 6:30pm.

Come along to our second event that aims to bring together industry professionals and fellow enthusiasts working in the DevOps and Platform Engineering space in Dublin. We look forward to meeting you!
