Details

Devoxx4Kids is focused on educating parents to teach their kids and show that it is possible to do something more creative with computers. The goal is to introduce parents and their kids to programming, robotics, and engineering in a fun way. This is achieved by organizing sessions where attendees can develop computer games, program robots, and have an introduction to electronics. For this first offering in Ottawa, we're going to focus on coding workshops.

Registration is now open! To sign up, see here:

https://www.regonline.com/registration/login.aspx?eventID=1993246&MethodId=0&EventsessionId=

The target age range for attendees is between ten and fourteen years of age (close counts). Registration includes lunch. We’re charging a modest fee of $30 to cover our expenses. Attendees will need to bring their own laptop computer to complete the exercises (we may be able to bring a few spares).

The first workshop (starting at 10 am) will focus on a simple game written in Javascript and HTML using a game engine called Phaser. Participants are shown some basic JavaScript expressions and are then invited to use their new knowledge to modify the game. This exercise virtually no set-up: the code is all self-contained, any text editor (including Notepad) can be used for modifications, and it all runs in a browser.

The second workshop (starting at 1 pm) is concerned with Minecraft Modding using Forge for Minecraft and Eclipse IDE as the development environment. This workshop has a few more moving parts than the first and so will require a bit more effort to set up.

Attendees will need to bring their own laptop computer to complete the exercises.

Let us know (emo@eclipse.org)

you do not have a laptop computer to use for this lab; we have a limited number of spare computers.
