Talk 1: Got `Any` excuses? How to write secure TypeScript code by design
Speaker: Michael Koppmann - Senior information security consultant @ SBA Research
Although TypeScript is growing in popularity, many of these codebases still suffer from security problems that are commonly found in JavaScript code. Developers are technically using TypeScript, including all the additional complexity that comes with it, without fully utilizing the benefits that this technology provides.
In this talk, we will explore how TypeScript can be leveraged to improve security by design, starting with quick wins. We will discuss several TypeScript compiler flags that enforce stricter type safety, such as discouraging the use of the `Any` type, and how these simple adjustments can significantly reduce risk.
From there, we will dive into lesser known patterns from functional languages like Sum/Union types or pattern matching and how they can be used in TypeScript to write more robust code.
