These sappy vigils DON’T WORK. Four thousand people are dead. Why aren’t we in the middle of downtown SCREAMING?

I left last Wednesday’s vigil early, in disgust. By the time I had gotten fifty feet away, you couldn’t even tell something was going on. No one driving past had any inkling there was an event in progress. It was mealy mouthed and pathetic. No wonder we’ve been there 5 years.

US MILITARY DEATHS IN IRAQ REACH 4,000 By JoeKay 24 March 2008
At least eight US soldiers were killed in Iraq over the weekend, amid a resurgence of violence underscoring the instability of the US-led military occupation. The number of US soldiers who have died in Iraq now stands at 4,000.
Seven soldiers were killed in two separate roadside bombs in Baghdad, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. The eighth was killed by “indirect fire”—mortar shells or rockets—on Friday south of Baghdad, according to the US military. So far, 27 US soldiers have been killed in the month of March.
Dozens of Iraqis were killed over the weekend in suicide bombings, and in raids carried out by the US.

***What: SANDAG Vote on Sunrise Powerlink******

Date: Thursday, APRIL 11th , 2008
Time: 10:00 AM -Noon !2:00PM
Place: SANDAG Board Room

Subject: NEW DATE Re SANDAG vote on Sunrise Powerlink/Need YOU to SPEAK OUT!

AN UPDATE TO MY E-MAIL OF 3/19 (good news for me and others who were going to be at State Dem. Convention on 3/28, SEE add'l note after the following date update):

"Hello EWG Interested Parties:
I wanted to make you aware of a schedule change in the Board’s review of transmission projects. The Board was originally scheduled to address the item on March 28th, but it has been moved to the April 11th meeting due to a full agenda on the 28th. April 11th meeting will take place in the SANDAG Board Room from 10am to noon. Please let me know if you have any questions that I can help you with.

Add'l NOTE from Martha: It may be as innocent as they know this will be a hot/long topic and want to be sure there is plenty of time to cover it, so they're moving it to another meeting date. It could also be that SDG&E/Sempra want more time to lock up their votes on the SANDAG Board -- SO, it is REALLY important, even if you don't think you'll go to this meeting on 4/11 -- to contact the SANDAG Board members BEFORE 4/11 to let them know the public is NOT behind this backward-looking boondoggle. You can see a list of the Board members (mayors, councilmembers, and county supervisors from each of the region's 19 local governments) at:

Subject: One more save the date! Cindy Sheehan

Date: Thursday, April 17.

Time: 7:00-9:00PM

Where: Cal State San Marcos campus

Please distribute widely. Especially to friends in North County. There may be another opportunity to visit with Cindy around this time; info soon on that. Thanks.

Hello Women's Studies Students, Graduates, and Faculty,

If you haven't already heard, peace activist Cindy Sheehan (the woman who went to President Bush's ranch in Texas and asked him to meet with her to explain for what "noble cause" her son died in the Iraq War, and helped jump-start the peace movement in 2005) will be on the Cal State San Marcos campus on Thursday, April 17. If you don't know much about Cindy Sheehan, here's one of thousands of articles written about her:

This is a special opportunity to meet with a dynamic woman activist who has been working for three years to stop the Iraq War. She will be speaking on campus at noon in a smaller event, designed specifically for Women's Studies students, about her current run for Congress and in the evening, to a larger crowd, about her activism to end the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

The flyers with all the details are listed below. Please note that you need a ticket to ensure a seat at the evening event, and that those should be picked up on Monday and Tuesday of this week, if at all possible, at the ASI Offices in FCB 5103 (in the building behind the main campus, around the corner from the Parking Services Office). They will be available first-come, first-serve, and we expect tickets to go quickly.

The evening event: : Thursday, April 17, 7-9 PM, Arts 240, Cindy Sheehan will talk about her experiences in becoming a peace activist and current efforts to end the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Pick up a ticket to reserve a seat. First-come, first-served. We expect an overflow crowd. See details on the webpage about picking up a ticket. It is strongly suggested you do so on Monday or Tuesday, March 24 and 25, in the ASI Office, before the tickets are available to the entire campus community. Women's Studies graduates who are no longer on campus, email Linda Pershing ([address removed]) if you'd like her to reserve tickets for you.

***NOON TIME EVENT: Informal question-and-answer session with Cindy Sheehan

When: Thursday, April 17

Time:2-1 PM

Place: University Hall 100.

is posted here:

Thursday, April 17, 12-1 PM in University Hall 100. Smaller, informal question-and-answer session with Cindy Sheehan, who will be sharing with Women's Studies students her experiences in moving from her role as a homemaker and mother to becoming a peace activist to running or Congress against Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. It is strongly suggested that you get to the room early to reserve a seat.

For more information, contact Linda Pershing at [address removed].

***From: John Falchi Writes: Tell Your Senators: Pass the Foreclosure Prevention Act

Dear Friend,

The economy is in crisis and millions of homeowners could lose
their homes -- dragging everyone's home values down. The Senate
will soon take up the "Foreclosure Prevention Act" -- a
well-designed piece of legislation that will provide greater
mortgage crisis counseling and help avert foreclosures through
structural reforms.

****Martha Sullivan writes

We have all been or will soon be hit hard with the
budget cuts and rising economic uncertainty in one way or another. While we likely differ on many issues I urge you to strongly consider your options as the elections near. Please visit to see exactly how much this war is impacting you, in your community. It's not something that is happening to other people in another land. It is impacting us at home.

So, before you vote I urge you to consider your options and do your research. Be informed!

Hope you are well!

THANK YOU for your consideration --
