Experimenters:

Our good friends at Mathworks (http://www.mathworks.com/), including Adam Filion (https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/profile/authors/2429191-adam-filion), are visiting to show us how to leverage the very popular industry data exploration tools. Matlab was my very first foray into the exploration of Data (more years ago than I care to explain) as a control systems analyst and engineer. Very happily, I'm here to say that their tools are still relevant for today's engineers.

Our speaker, Adam Filion, is a Senior Application Engineer at MathWorks. He has spent the last three years focusing on applying data analytics, machine learning and big data in scientific and engineering fields. Prior to his current role he worked on the use of MATLAB for research and teaching in academia. Before MathWorks he was at Virginia Tech where he earned his MS in Aerospace Engineering with research focused on nonlinear controls of spacecraft and periodic orbits in the three-body problem.

Abstract:
Using Data Analytics to turn large volumes of complex data into actionable information can help you improve engineering design and decision-making processes. However, developing effective analytics and integrating them into business systems can be challenging. In this seminar you will learn approaches and techniques available in MATLAB to tackle these challenges. Focus will be placed on newer techniques from recent MATLAB releases. Highlights include:

  • Accessing, exploring, and analyzing big data stored in files, the web, and data warehouses
  • Techniques for cleaning, exploring, visualizing, and combining complex multivariate data sets
  • Prototyping, testing, and refining predictive models using machine learning methods
  • Integrating and running analytics within enterprise business systems and interactive web applications
