Was Caesar called the “son of god”? Christian Responses to Debunking Arguments

Details

For those who affirm historical religions, like Christianity, history matters. Their faith stands or falls on what actually happened. But some critics claim that this very commitment to history makes faith vulnerable to being “debunked” by certain facts about the past. Certain scholars of the bible and ancient history, for instance, point out that Christianity contained almost nothing new and borrowed heavily from other traditions. More recently, scientific accounts of religion (which draw on facts about human minds and the deep past to explain why people are prone to believe in supernatural agents) have also been used as a way to explain away or debunk religious faith. This talk explores these two alleged debunking strategies and considers a number of ways in which Christians and theists more generally might respond to them.

Our guest speaker, Jason, will present for about 30 minutes, and then anyone can ask questions or make comments for another 40 minutes or so. We welcome friendly disagreement!

The Hard Questions group is for anyone interested in rational discussions between Christians, atheists, agnostics, skeptics, and anyone else with an inquiring mind.
