Wednesdays: 4/6, 11/6, 18/6, 25/6
This 6-part workshop is about awakening your body from within—building strength, balance and confidence through expressive, contemporary movement rooted in the foundational techniques of Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, and José Limón.
Taught by Gillian Tan who returned to Singapore in 2010 after obtaining
her MFA in Choreography at Purchase College, Conservatory of Dance in New York. She received her grant from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts where she is currently a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader with the Faculty of Performing Arts, School of Dance.
In 1999, Gillian set up Dancers In Collaboration as an outreach program
and in that same year she was also appointed as technique tutor for National University of Singapore (NUS) Dance Synergy. Since 2005-2008 she has been their artistic advisor for their annual Exxon-Mobil Campus Concert production. She was the choreographer and director of musicals for Nanyang Polytechnic for 8 years and was also serving on one of the advisory committees at the National Arts Council of Singapore.
During the summer of 2009, she danced with Dance New York International in Paris under the direction of Kazuko Hirabayashi’s Dance New York International where she worked with
Wilfried Romoli, former star of The Paris Opera, and Koji Minato former dancer of The
Cunningham Company. Her work ‘Restless’ has been presented and performed in Espace Paris
Plaine during the workshop. In that same year her work ‘Incense’ was presented in the White Wave-Dumbo Festival on September 26th, 2009 at the John Ryan Theatre in New York.
In recent years, Gillian’s contribution to the dance scene in Singapore continues at NAFA where she is the module leader and mentor for Dance Production & Creation modules with
School of Dance. She has since created works such as Meeting Space (2014), No Excess Baggage (2016), Phantasmagoria of Dreams (2018), 2:1 (2019), Embracing the distance…the void between us matters (2021) and In Transition (2023) to name a few.
In 2002 her chapter is a publication from ‘Teaching and Learning the Arts in Higher Education with Technology; Understanding Dance Production: Blended Learning from Online to Classroom to the stage.’
