The AZ Shutterbugs Pages

It's all about the photography. If you are interested in photography, are an old pro, or new to the idea of a digital camera, this group is for you, and we are glad you found us! Our goal is to bring adults of all ages and all skill levels together to share information about digital photography from technique to gear to how to deal with pesky software problems, and to provide an outlet for sharing our work, boosting creativity and making our photographs even better.

This page contains information you'll need to know as a member of our group, so please take a couple of minutes to read it through. (Yes, I know it looks long, but it'll be worth it!)

Show Your Stuff is a monthly meeting to share our photographs and get comments and ideas from our peers. This meeting is a great way to keep yourself shooting, stretch your creativity, and have a bit of social time with other photographers. Show Your Stuff is for members and adult guests. Each month, the meeting will have a different theme - chosen randomly - and members will shoot their interpretation of that theme.
What: Show Your Stuff monthly meeting
When: 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month (Social time 7-7:30; meeting begins at 7:30)
Where: Currently, The Arc of Tempe Recreation Center, 501 E. Broadway, Tempe, 85282. Check the calendar for details
Bring: One to three (8x10 or larger) of your best themed shots. There will be meetings where we ask you to choose just one for discussion. Time permitting, we will also share non-theme photos. On occasion, we do a digital SYS, so watch the meetup details to see if you need to email your photot to someone.
Cost: We ask for a small donation for the use of the center, and, if you're hungry, bring snacks to share. Beverages will be provided..

Local Shoots will be at various places in the Phoenix area an hour or less drive for most members. These will include outdoor and indoor venues, and may be a very small group or large one, depending on who is free to join us. These will generally be half-day events and will include shooting at a specific location, followed by meeting a nearby restaurant for a meal and some social time.

Day Trips will be scheduled monthly if interest continues. These trips will be farther reaching and we will name meetup spots on the east and west side to carpool to the shoot locations. On occasion, these trips may be overnighters.
These longer trips will require a bit more preparation on your part:

  • Be prepared: Read the calendar entry thoroughly and check out any links provided. Dress appropriately for the climate we're visiting. Wear sturdy shoes if there will be hiking involved, and bring water. We will provide as much information about the area as possible, but, ultimately, your comfort and safety are your responsibility.
  • Know your route: Route maps - with printable maps and directions - will be posted in the calendar entry. It is not always possible for several cars to stick together on a long trip. If you're driving, be sure to have the appropriate maps and directions handy.
  • Keep contact numbers: An organizer will email his or her cell number to those who RSVP 'Yes" and "Maybe' to the day trips. Program these into your phone or bring them with you to the meetup.
  • Keep in Touch: For most events, group members will go in different directions after setting a designated time and place to regroup. If you decide to head for home at some point in the day, let someone know about it so the rest of the group is not waiting or searching for you when it's time to meet up again.

Workshops will be added to our schedule soon. The workshops, like the Show Your Stuff meetings, will be more structured events. We will cover specific topics using experts from within our group and occasionally bringing in professionals from outside the group. These workshops will be held at various locations throughout the greater Phoenix area.


The Calendar is your information line for upcoming events and the organizers' way of knowing how many to expect at a given event. Please check for new events regularly and RSVP for all events. Even if your RSVP is 'No,' it helps us to plan current and future meetups.

The Message Board is a great way to keep in touch with other members between meetups. Whether you're seeking advice, posting info or an opinion, or even throwing a shoot idea out there, this is a great on-line tool to get to know the members and share information. If you have questions about how to use the message board, contact your organizers and we'll do our best to provide answers.

Event Photo Albums can be started by anyone who attended a meetup. When you reply to the survey to rate an event, there is a link to upload photos from the event. Albums can hold up to 100 photos - if we fill up one album, your organizers will start a second one.

Non-event Photo Albums will be posted periodically by the organizers for anyone who wishes to upload shots. (An example of this is the Fireworks album posted after July 4th.)

POTM (Photo of the Month) album is a contest in which members may submit one shot from the previous month - be it from an azshutterbugs meetup or from the persons's own adeventures of the month. The contest is anonymous, and submissions are emailed to an organizer - currently David Sacks - who will then post them in an album and post a poll for members so members may vote for their favorite(s). So, what do you get when you win? Well, you get the undying admiration of your peers, plus, your photo gets added to the slide show on the Home Page.

Open Class Photo Album- Share Your Photos is a place to share the great shot that you just have to post but don't know where to post it. You may want to post a message pointing to it, as well, so we'll know it's there.

Polls (in addition to the POTM poll) will be posted now and then to get an idea of where the members want this group to be going. Please check any polls posted and VOTE in them. It only takes a minute, and it's a way for your organizers to know what you want.

Email links are provided for most members and all organizers. If you have a question, suggestion, or gripe, email an organizer.

The Mailing list option is available to all members. You may choose to be a part of it or not. The mailing list is a tool for distributing information with a single email to the members who are on it. If you have information on an upcoming class or workshop in the area, or a photographic event, you may use the mailing list, in addition to posting it to the message board. We do ask, however, that if you have more than one piece of information to send, you send it all in one email so as not to bog down the members with multiple emails. This list is not to be used for personal advertising. Anyone using it for this purpose will be removed from the group.

Resource Pages are a feature we will add to the site in the near future. These will include lists of resources - both local and on-line - that our members have used and recommend. We're currently compiling a list of labs and other venues for printing.


Inactive members (according to are those who have not at least visited the website in three or more months. We feel this is a pretty good indicator, and so, will periodically drop members who are considered inactive by (After first sending an email to let those members know they are considered inactive.) If this happens to you, don't take it personally. We understand that sometimes there just isn't time to keep up with everything and those who are dropped are free to rejoin and will be welcomed back.

Shoots can be suggested by anyone. If there's a place you're dying to go and want company, post it to the message board or email an organizer. If you have a date and time and you're willing to be there to get the ball rolling, it will show up on the calendar. The more suggestions we have, the more opportunities for our members to get out there and shoot.

A note about this website - it is our tool for communicating, not the group itself. Of course, you are free to be a member, look at the website, maybe post an occasional comment if that's all you want to do or are able to do. Ultimately, though, you will get out of this group as little or as much as you put into it. Participation in meetups allows you to meet other photographers in the area, make new friends, and hone your skills. And, let's face it, people are so much more interesting in person! smile
