Expert Exchange & Afterwork hangout

Expert Exchange is a regular meetup for discussing advanced technical topics hosted by Cloudflight. It will take place in our Linz and Vienna office!

We first listen to a talk – either live or recorded and then start a discussion under a guidance of an experienced moderator.

After the discussion round we plan an unofficial gathering at our office. Anyone interested in Cloudflight and who wants to have a chat with us is invited to join us!

###### The topic of this month is: From Monolith to (Spring) Modulith

• Microservices have been around for quite some time. A common critique is that those who cannot construct a well-designed monolith are likely to struggle with developing a microservice architecture. Anyone who has attempted this has faced challenges, particularly because each service must be deployed separately, with its own versions, APIs, configs, etc. So, what’s a good alternative? Enter "Modular Monoliths," or "Moduliths," a promising approach to designing a single deployment unit capable of effectively serving multiple modules without resulting in a tangled code.
• The popular Spring framework recently announced the general availability of their Modulith project (more info: https://spring.io/blog/2023/08/21/spring-modulith-1-0-ga-released) and celebrated it with a talk at the recent Spring I/O. (here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1GLgevELdM).
• At the Exchange, we'll watch the most critical parts of this talk and conclude with a discussion about the design of modular monoliths. We’ll cover when they are most suitable and the potential drawbacks of adopting this approach in upcoming projects.
