About the talk
Thursday March 6th 2025, 15:30 - 16:30 (includes talk and time for networking).

What are the implications of designing research tools for participatory research that integrate universal design and disability expertise? To address this question, Barbara Nino-Carreras draws on the accessibility assessment of the Urban Belonging App, a digital tool used by researchers to collect data about the city from disabled people and other marginalized groups. In this presentation, she will outline how an app intended to gather diverse perspectives on urban belonging was not initially designed with web accessibility in mind. Collaborating with researchers from the ECHO LAB and TANT Lab, who develop and maintain the app, as well as the digital accessibility consultancy UseIt Denmark, she will discuss the lessons learned from assessing the app and explore their implications for other research projects developing digital tools for participatory research.

About the speaker
Barbara N. Carreras (she/her)
Barbara is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics at the University of Copenhagen. She is part of the European research project NewWorkTech, where she combines video ethnography, ethnomethodology, conversation analysis, and action research to collaborate with disabled people and explore their use of assistive technologies in work-from-home and workplace settings. Barbara obtained her PhD from the IT University of Copenhagen in 2024 where she was part of the ETHOS Lab and Technologies in Practice (TiP) research group. She is a member of the Bevica Foundation’s Universal Design Research Network. Her work integrates multimodal forms of collaborative analysis, focusing on digital accessibility, disability culture, sequential art, artistic methods, and experimental ethnography. Her studies are located at the intersection of science & technology studies (STS) and human-computer interaction (HCI).

Practicalities
The Meetup will be hybrid, with the possibility of coming to NR to see the digital talk and stay for networking and discussion with other participants. If you want to participate digitally, the link to the event will be sent to the participants a couple of days before the talk. The talk will be in English.
